Just a quick (slightly snarky) survey...

SO just a quick survey, my friends.  Just because I'm curious.

Here's the scenario:

One day, you're in your local library when the fire alarms start blaring.  Library staff directs everyone, both over the intercom and makes the rounds personally, to evacuate the building through the front entrance.  At this point, you:

A: Smile at the nice librarian, but continue checking out your selected books and DVDs at the self-charge machine.

B: Continue up to the circulation desk to argue your 20 cent library fine. (And look around like you can't figure out why no one is at the desk.)

C: Plant yourself firmly in front of your laptop, waiting for whatever it is you were pulling up to finish downloading, until a usually very mild-mannered librarian has to yell at you to "Get Out Now!!"

Or D: Exit the building, because...well, duh

Again...just curious. Because YES, in my library yesterday, A, B, and C actually happened.

Luckily for them, the building turned out NOT to be on fire. But still.

  1. Haha! This is ridiculous I can't believe the fire bell went off and people tried to stay inside the building. Idiots.

  3. I would leave but I must confess, I might quickly stash my books somewhere or take them with me and bring them back in to check them out.

  4. Haha, I might take a pile of books with me, but my first instinct would be: AWAY!

  5. Ahahahahahaha. People. I mean, I wouldn't LIKE that I had to leave the building, but I WOULD. I worked at a movie theater for a couple of years and we had the fire alarm go off once, and people were PISSED. They tried to stay in their seats in the theaters, even as the alarm is blaring and the movies had stopped. No thing you're doing is more important than not burning to death. Geez.

  6. This makes me think of when I went to a conference at the local high school. The fire alarm went off and many of the people that evacuated stood outside right by the entrance. A few were standing inside the doorway, just socializing. And there I am a few feet away on the sidewalk, which is where people should be.

If I was at the library I would have dropped everything on a counter on my way out of the building, stopped what ever it is I am doing and leave until I am given the okay to go back in again.

  7. Haha. That's a funny story. Sad, but people can react so oddly sometimes.

  8. LOL, I thought you guys would get a kick out of this story! :D
Now see, for those of you that said you might just leave with your books and come back to check them out, I totally would have been okay with that. But this guy literally just smiled at us and kept checking his stuff out at a nice leisurely pace. I mean, come on!

  9. People do the same thing in my library. There was a small fire in the cafe next to our library (all in the same building) several months ago, and one guy actually came back into the library so he could go to the bathroom. Hopefully, we (and you) never have a more serious fire--otherwise, our patrons will get themselves into trouble.

  10. That's really rather hilarious. I'd probably tuck my unchecked out books somewhere I could easily snatch them back up when they let us back into the building...then walk out.
