New Shelf Goodies & The Weekly Nutshell {113}

For New Shelf Goodies, I'll be showing you what lovely books I acquired this week, whether from publishers, or the library, or from whatever half-crazed book-buying binge I happened to go on. :D (Inspired by Tynga's Stacking the Shelves) The Weekly Nutshell will be just week here at Stories & Sweeties, in a nutshell. (inspired by Ginger @ GReads and her recaps at the end of the TGIF posts)

My haul of happiness:
as recommended by Morgan---who says bloggers don't sell books?? :D

For review:
Epic happy dance!! I can't wait to see what happens after that incredible ending in Perfect Ruin!!
The happy dancing excited for this one!
Eeep! So. much. happy dancing!! This book is definitely one of my most anticipated of 2015!  The ARC came with the final cover art inserted inside,
 like so:
And all that happy dancing was a timely calorie burner, because I also received this beauty for review:
Home Baked Comfort by Kim Laidlaw
I adore Williams-Sonoma cookbooks. So much yumminess and always the best food photography around.  I don't review cookbooks here, but I take on a few for the publication I write for.  But I will tell you now, every single recipe within looks amazing. Daughter has already said she wants us to bake our way through it, Julie & Julia style. :)

Many thanks to Penguin, Scholastic, & Simon & Schuster for the review books!

The Weekly Nutshell
{Tuesday} Waiting on Wednesday: Dark Shimmer

Wow, I guess I just sort of fell off the radar this week!  I haven't felt much like blogging; partly for the fact that there is just lots going on in daily life, but if I'm honest it's partly because of all the negative ugliness going on this week regarding Stacey Jay.  She is a favorite author of mine and I happened upon her blog post earlier this week---when I investigated further, I was just shocked at the amount of judgmental nastiness going on in the YA community.   She asked for help from her fans, was completely open about what all donations would be used for, was honest about the fact that she could not afford to write a book without financial backing so without it, she would have to concentrate on things that actually put food on the table, and was completely dragged through the mud for it. I don't get it.  Why people felt they had the right to judge her, accuse her of blackmail or any other devious thing, call her names and threaten to post her home address (huh??) is beyond my comprehension. She reached out to her fans to back a book that she thought they might want to read but was not being picked up by her publisher---something hundreds of authors have done before her.  That's all. Kickstarter works like this: if you don't like the idea, don't donate. End of story.  This kind of negativity just saps me of all will to blog and makes me want to run from the internet screaming.

Anyhoo...sorry for the rant. But that's my two cents. I know I generally stay out of these things, but especially after Stacey's post where she bravely stands up for herself and we see clearly just how hurt she was by all of this, I couldn't help but get it off my chest.

In other news LOL...
Finished Monstrous this week, and it was dark and lovely :) Full review coming soon. Starting Storm Siren today, yippee!

Happy reading, everyone! And many happy thoughts---we can't fly without them, right? :D

I really want to read The Conspiracy of Us! I haven't heard too many great things but that doesn't matter.

I'm honestly disgusted by some of the things that were said by people in the community this past week regarding Stacey Jay. Sure, they're allowed an opinion, but to make threats and to try to gather your friends and go on some sort of witch hunt is horrifying. I went on a giant unfollowing spree because I couldn't handle it. Sorry to hear that one of your favourite authors isn't able to keep writing :(

  2. Huuuugs. <3 I'm sorry you haven't felt like blogging :( people can be so mean. Sigh. I hope you are doing okay, though. <3 And omg, SO MANY BOOKS. Burning Kingdoms! I'm so excited for it. And curious about The Sin Eater's Daughter :D I hope you'll love them all Becky. <3 Happy reading sweetie and I hope you'll have a great upcoming week :)

  3. I'm very jealous of you having a copy of Sin Eaters Daughter, my friends meant to be sending me a copy but I don't know when *cries* hope you love it Becky! Also, Every Breath is SO LOVED by so many people, hopefully you love it too :)

  4. AH, you are so lucky to receive The Sin Eater's Daughter! I am so so super excited to read that one. Hope you will enjoy it :)

  5. Conspiracy of us & The sin eater's daughter are two books I'm very excited about - and I'm in love with the covers. I'm very sad about everything that happened around Stacey Jay and the Kickstarter project.. I was a bit doubtful about the KS to be honest, but I seriously can't understand how this all escalated into such a mess.. I hope you get back into blogging soon :)

I can't wait to hear your thoughts on The Conspiracy of Us. I also had no idea about the Stacey Jay issue. Wow. People are so cruel and it's disheartening. I sort of keep my head down and that means I never know what is going on in the YA world, so thanks for the heads up. I hope you enjoy your books!

  7. I hate when negativity gets into the blogging world. I mean it happens, but sheesh. I'm stoked to see that you got The Sin Eater's Daughter. I love the sound of that one and the cover is gorgeous! Hope you have a better week!

  8. I loved Every Breath. Need to get my hands on Every Word. I've already pre ordered The Sin Eaters Daughter.

  9. I'm happy that you got The Sin Eater's Daughter. Heard very good things about it. The cover is beautiful indeed.

  10. I felt the same way during all the Stacey Jay craziness. I didn't blog much this week either. If nothing else, hopefully the whole situation will somehow be a catalyst for positive change.

I adored The Conspiracy of Us - hope you enjoy as well!

  11. I cannot get over The Sin Eaters Daughter's cover. It is a piece of art!

I had not heard about the Stacey Jay drama until now. How sad. I don't understand the negativity. If I don't like something, that's cool, I move on. There are much bigger issues happening in the world for which people should take a stand and speak up. I hope she finds the support and strength to put this behind her.

  12. I was totally unaware of the Stacey Jay stuff going on until after the fact, but it just sounds terrible. Why do people think it's okay to act in such a way? It's so easy to close the window if you read something you don't agree with and not to take it to another level. It just makes me sad that this kind of stuff goes on.

On a happier note, YAY for all of your lovelies! I so meant to request The Sin-Eater's Daughter but completely forgot and now I'm sitting around jealous of everyone's pretty, pretty copies. Ooh, AND The Conspiracy of Us? Such a good mail week! :)

Ahhhh I really hope you like Every Breath!!! The pressure! :) Makes me so happy you bought it though because of what I said hehe. I'm excited to read The Sin Eater's Daughter too! Put The Conspiracy of Us on hold at the library :) It's going to be a good reading month. That Williams Sonoma cookbook looks AMAZING! I love WS and I love baking, might have to check it out :D Can't wait for your Storm Siren review!
