description:
“Miss Rook, I am not
an occultist,” Jackaby said. “I have a gift that allows me to see truth
where others see the illusion--and there are many illusions. All the
world’s a stage, as they say, and I seem to have the only seat in the
house with a view behind the curtain.”
Newly arrived in New Fiddleham, New England, 1892, and in need of a job, Abigail Rook meets R. F. Jackaby, an investigator of the unexplained with a keen eye for the extraordinary--including the ability to see supernatural beings. Abigail has a gift for noticing ordinary but important details, which makes her perfect for the position of Jackaby’s assistant. On her first day, Abigail finds herself in the midst of a thrilling case: A serial killer is on the loose. The police are convinced it’s an ordinary villain, but Jackaby is certain it’s a nonhuman creature, whose existence the police--with the exception of a handsome young detective named Charlie Cane--deny.
Doctor Who meets Sherlock in William Ritter’s debut novel, which features a detective of the paranormal as seen through the eyes of his adventurous and intelligent assistant in a tale brimming with cheeky humor and a dose of the macabre.

My thoughts: They had me at "Doctor Who" meets "Sherlock". There is no way I'm not reading this after a comparison like that. :) Plus all the mystery, supernatural elements, and a Victorian setting puts this squarely on my most-wanted list.
I'm really excited about this one too! And I agree who wouldn't want to read it with a description like that!! Hope you get a chance to read it soon :)

The cover is kind of creepy but it's great!! Haven't heard of this series but sounds like a solid mystery novel. I can see why the romance irritated you- I hate those will-they-won't-they scenarios too. Awesome review.
ReplyDeleteGreat pick! I am desperate to get my hands on a copy of Jackaby as it sounds fantastic! I'll definitely be picking up a copy of this as soon as I can :)

ReplyDeleteWhat a TERRIFIC pick!! I'm not very familiar with Dr. Who, although I do know who he is, lol. However, Sherlock Holmes is my favorite fictinal detective, so of course I'm intrigued by the plot of this novel! And the fact that Jackaby can actually SEE supernatural beings makes this novel even MORE fascinating! I'm rushing over to Goodreads to add it to my shelves!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for dropping by and commenting on my own WOW!! : )
Thank you Becky! I'll try :D

ReplyDeleteOH MY. I need this! I was just enjoying reading the synopsis, but Doctor Who meets Sherlock?? Must. Have. I love the title and cover, too! Great pick Becky!
ReplyDeleteInteresting sounding characters
ReplyDeleteNice honest review
ReplyDeleteI didn't finish Beautiful Creatures as well but I had to get this audiobook because Link and Ridley were the most interesting things about the books. I'm glad the spin-off is actually better than the original series.
