First We Were IV by Alexandra Sirowy {story behind the title & giveaway}

Hello! Today I'm hosting the blog tour stop for Alexandra Sirowy's
FIRST WE WERE IV
Read on for a guest post from Alexandra, where she'll tell us all about the conception of the title, and a tour-wide giveaway!

by Alexandra Sirowy
♦publisher: Simon & Schuster BYR
♦release date: July 25th, 2017
♦hardcover, 448 pages
♦intended audience: Young adult
♦stand-alone
It started for pranks, fun, and forever memories.
A secret society – for the four of us.
The rules: Never lie. Never tell. Love each other.
We made the pledge and danced under the blood moon on the meteorite in the orchard. In the spot we found the dead girl five years earlier. And discovered the ancient drawings way before that.
Nothing could break the four of us apart – I thought.
But then, others wanted in. Our seaside town had secrets. History.
We wanted revenge.
We broke the rules. We lied. We told. We loved each other too much, not enough, and in ways we weren’t supposed to.
Our invention ratcheted out of control.
What started as a secret society, ended as justice. Revenge. Death. Rebellion.

The Story Behind the Title:

The title for my upcoming book, FIRST WE WERE IV, came to me almost as soon as the first impulse of “I want to write a book about four best friends who start a secret society to play vigilante-pranks, but it ratchets way out of control and twists into a weapon of revenge, costing all of them something, and one of them everything” did. A chaotic impulse, I know.
This title was with me from the beginning and I never considered another because FIRST WE WERE IV cuts right to the bone of what the story is. The title helped to shape the book as I wrote. It evokes the books twisty, mysterious atmosphere. It’s also the first thing people ask about the book – what’s up with the title? What does it mean? Why use a Roman numeral?
The title hints at one of the book’s core mysteries. Four best friends – Izzie, Viv, Graham, and Harry – invent a secret society. Only three survive it. FWWIV begins with the end of their story. The aftermath. It begins with broken hearts and broken rules. It begins with a dead body.
I chose to use the Roman numeral IV for the same reason Viv tells the group they should name their secret society the Order of IV rather than the Order of Four – way more badass.

Waiting on Wednesday

"Waiting on Wednesday" is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. It lets us all gush about what soon-to-be released books we are jumping-up-and-down excited for.
by Melissa Bashardoust

from Flatiron Books
At sixteen, Mina's mother is dead, her magician father is vicious, and her silent heart has never beat with love for anyone—has never beat at all, in fact, but she’d always thought that fact normal. She never guessed that her father cut out her heart and replaced it with one of glass. When she moves to Whitespring Castle and sees its king for the first time, Mina forms a plan: win the king’s heart with her beauty, become queen, and finally know love. The only catch is that she’ll have to become a stepmother.

Fifteen-year-old Lynet looks just like her late mother, and one day she discovers why: a magician created her out of snow in the dead queen’s image, at her father’s order. But despite being the dead queen made flesh, Lynet would rather be like her fierce and regal stepmother, Mina. She gets her wish when her father makes Lynet queen of the southern territories, displacing Mina. Now Mina is starting to look at Lynet with something like hatred, and Lynet must decide what to do—and who to be—to win back the only mother she’s ever known…or else defeat her once and for all.

Entwining the stories of both Lynet and Mina in the past and present, Girls Made of Snow and Glass traces the relationship of two young women doomed to be rivals from the start. Only one can win all, while the other must lose everything—unless both can find a way to reshape themselves and their story.

My thoughts:  I've seen this one compared to Frozen, The Bloody Chamber, Snow White, and Wicked---and whether any or all of those are accurate, I am dying to read this story just based on it's own amazing synopsis.  This one's been on my radar for awhile, but I've been dying to see the cover, and it was well worth the wait. Gorgeous.

New Shelf Goodies & The Weekly Nutshell {187}

For New Shelf Goodies, I'll be showing you what lovely books I acquired this week, whether from publishers, or the library, or from whatever half-crazed book-buying binge I happened to go on. :D (Inspired by Tynga's Stacking the Shelves) The Weekly Nutshell will be just that...my week here at Stories & Sweeties, in a nutshell. (inspired by Ginger @ GReads and her recaps at the end of the TGIF posts)

A nice small hall this week :) So excited for all three of these, tho!
For review:
Edgeland by Jake Halpern & Peter Kujawinski
Shimmer and Burn by Mary Taranta
The Rattled Bones by S.M. Parker
Edgeland looks really interesting and thankfully its a companion, not a sequel to Nightfall (which I haven't read). The other two look amazing and they were recent WoW picks for me, so YAY! :D

The Weekly Nutshell
Well this week I was a slacky blogger LOL. I did manage to get a WoW post up featuring the glorious cover that I've been waiting for for so long, The Dire King. :D So freaking excited for this book. SO sad that this will be the last. This past week I finished up Dream Magic and started Umberland. Next up will be Cold Summer for the blog tour later this month.  This week on the blog there will be bit more action haha...the blog tours for First There Were Four and Literally will both be rolling through!

So aside from being busy with other stuffs, I mostly didn't blog because I was feeling terrible.  I'll be in and out with a few more tests this week while we try to pin down why my body has suddenly gone haywire. So a few good thoughts are always appreciated, if you've got some to spare.♥

Lots of happy reading to everyone! :D

Waiting on Wednesday

"Waiting on Wednesday" is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. It lets us all gush about what soon-to-be released books we are jumping-up-and-down excited for.
The Dire King
by William Ritter

hitting shelves August 22d, 2017
from Algonquin Young Readers
The fate of the world is in the hands of detective of the supernatural R. F. Jackaby and his intrepid assistant, Abigail Rook. An evil king is turning ancient tensions into modern strife, using a blend of magic and technology to push Earth and the Otherworld into a mortal competition. Jackaby and Abigail are caught in the middle as they continue to solve the daily mysteries of New Fiddleham, New England — like who’s created the rend between the worlds, how to close it, and why zombies are appearing around. At the same time, the romance between Abigail and the shape-shifting police detective Charlie Cane deepens, and Jackaby’s resistance to his feelings for 926 Augur Lane’s ghostly lady, Jenny, begins to give way. Before the four can think about their own futures, they will have to defeat an evil that wants to destroy the future altogether.

The epic conclusion to the New York Times best-selling Jackaby series features sly humor and a quirky cast of unforgettable characters as they face off against their most dangerous, bone-chilling foe ever.

My thoughts:  Eeeee! We have a cover..we have an awesome synopsis...and..."epic conclusion??? Nooooo. I love this fun series and I would easily have welcomed 3 or 4 more. Not ready to reach the end. Still, very much looking forward to this book. Haven't read them yet? You can check out my previous reviews here, here, and here to convince you that YOU MUST. :)

New Shelf Goodies & The Weekly Nutshell {186}

My mail this week included several of my most highly anticipated books of the year!
From Trades:
The Gentlemen's Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee
The Last Magician by Lisa Maxwell
These two OMG, I've been so eager to get my hands on these. I loved Made You Up by Lee so much and Unhooked by Maxwell was one of my favorites last year. Thank you SO MUCH to my trade partners for these!!

Purchased:
Traitor to the Throne (UK paperback) by Alwyn Hamiltion
Another sequel to one of last year's faves!! I actually really like the cover redesign on these, but when it came time to buy a copy, I went for the cover that matched the gorgeous artistic original cover I have already. Thank the UK for keeping the same design!! SO pretty.

For review:
The Dragons of Nova by Elise Kova
And yet another sequel to one of my faves of last year!! I am so freaking excited about this one. If you look closely you can get a little sneak peek at the cover on the ARC, but I made sure not to face this one out since the cover hasn't been revealed yet ;)
Hello, Sunshine by Leila Howland
This one has such a cute cover and I've heard great things about this author, so I couldn't resist accepting this one for review!
We Come Apart by Sarah Crossan & Brian Conaghan
This one came unsolicited, but I think I'll give it a try---everyone once in while I really enjoy a novel in versea and this one sounds interesting.
Cold Summer by Gwen Cole
I'll be reviewing this one this month for the blog tour--it sounds amazing, time travel between present and WWII.

Thanks so much to Disney, Bloomsbury, Keymaster Press, and Sky Pony Press for the review books!

The Weekly Nutshell
This week I feel like I hardly had time to read at all because of other projects and things taking up my time. I did start Traitor to the Throne and I'll be starting Umberland, both of which I am super excited about.  My WoW pick for this week was That Inevitable Victorian Thing and it's gorgeous new cover. So pretty.  My lovely bestie Amy reviewed Poison's Kiss and gave it a four-cupcake rating. :)   And yesterday I posted the "What's New" April release list with all the fabulous new releases headed our way this month.

So it's very late because my daughter and I just finished binge watching the first five episodes of Thirteen Reasons Why. I'm really liking what they've done with it so far. This incredible book has been one of our favorites for years so I'm glad to see it done well. Also binged these past few weeks were Emerald City (which was awesome, can't wait for season 2) and Timeless (I LOVED this show so much. The history, the costumes, the way they all geeked out about meeting such significant historical figures!).  So now what should we watch?? We're at a loss, and I've got two weeks before Doctor Who starts it's new season! Woohooo! :D

Happy reading, all! Have a great week!

What's New: April 2017 YA Release List & Giveaway!

Wow, why do these months keep going by so fast!? It honestly feels like the year just started and here we are already in April. The weather is turning warmer day by day, I'm getting the itch to garden even though I seriously suck at it LOL, and everyone's allergies are going nuts!  My days have been racing by due to lots of changes at work and a fun project that I've been working on at home that combines many of my favorite hobbies in one little creation---I'm having so much fun. Fill your life with hobbies, people. There is so much joy in just surrounding yourself with things you love. ♥

So if you're new to Stories & Sweeties, here's a little run-down of this feature: at the start of each month, I do a little thing called the "What's New List & Giveaway" where you'll find a full list of the new releases in YA for the month, and entry to the international giveaway. At the end of each month, one lucky winner will get to choose any new release as their prize!

First things first! The winner of March's giveaway is Evie!  Congrats!
