"History is on repeat, and things didn't go so well the last time. "

Alexandria isn't sure she's going to make it to her eighteenth birthday--to her Awakening. A long-forgotten, fanatical order is out to kill her, and if the Council ever discovers what she did in the Catskills, she's a goner... and so is Aiden.

If that's not freaky enough, whenever Alex and Seth spend time "training"--which really is just Seth's code word for some up-close and personal one-on-one time--she ends up with another mark of the Apollyon, which brings her one step closer to Awakening ahead of schedule. Awesome.

But as her birthday draws near, her entire world shatters with a startling revelation and she's caught between love and Fate. One will do anything to protect her. One has been lying to her since the beginning. Once the gods have revealed themselves, unleashing their wrath, lives will be irrevocably changed... and destroyed.

Those left standing will discover if love is truly greater than Fate...

Review: Well, what can I say.  We're three books into the Covenant series (four if you count Daimon, the novella)...and I have yet to give any of them less that 5 cupcakes.  Deity is so worthy of continuing that streak.  There is just something so incredible about this series and about Jennifer L. Armentrout's writing.  It just completely sucks you in.  I think the thing I love most, while they must be read in sequence to even know what it going on, is that each individual book carries it's own story arc. There is no second-book-slump, no third-book-boredom.   Each time you are pulled in somewhat gently, allowed to settle back into the Covenant world and setting, and then its all breath-taking action, heart-stopping shocks, plenty of emotional turmoil and swoon-enducing romance, and then it ends with the reader knowing there is more but feeling almost safe and calm...and then you're abruptly pushed over a cliff at the very last second.  Deity, just like it's predecessors, was a thrilling roller coaster of a story, and I loved every second of it.

Alex is just as funny, just as passionate, just as tough as always.  She goes through some pretty intense emotional stuff this time around---mourning Caleb, coping with being shut out from friends, dealing with Seth, hiding what happened during the daimon attack, and all the while her birthday and her becoming the Apollyon creeps ever closer.  She gets an emotional bomb dropped on her with a mysterious letter that arrives.  She seems to be the target of the head minister's cruel plans.  And then there is Aiden.  OH the romance in this is steamy.  Armentrout gets my vote for most amazing YA romance writer---watching Alex and Aiden in this constant dance of denying their attraction to one another and telling themselves they can never be together just intensifies until it all comes crashing down.  Their moments together are enough to get the heart pounding, but the descriptiveness stays just under the radar of what seems appropriate for YA readers, if that makes sense.  I have to admit, that's one of the reasons I prefer most YA romance as apposed to adult romance---sometimes I like a few things left to the imagination. ;)  This does that perfectly.

I loved all the new characters and "changing" characters in this installment.  One of my favorite developments is the sort of metamorphosis of the relationship between Alex and her uncle, Marcus.  Alex learns that things are not always what they seem.  This time around she also learns the hard lesson of when to stop trusting and hoping for the best in someone.

Deity was gripping and emotionally charged from beginning to end. This series continues to be one of my absolute favorites.  Book 4, Apollyon, is coming out April 2013---thank the stars it's not a full year's wait or I think I might have cried!

Waiting on Wednesday

"Waiting on Wednesday" is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. It lets us all gush about what soon-to-be released books we are jumping-up-and-down excited for.
September Girls
by Bennett Madison

hitting shelves May 21st, 2013 from Harper Teen

description:
When Sam finds himself in a sleepy little beach town for the summer, it doesn’t take long for him to realize there’s something strange going on beneath its surface. Everywhere he looks, there are beautiful blond girls. Girls who seem inexplicably drawn to him.

One of the girls, DeeDee, is different. But just as he starts to fall for her, she pulls away, leaving him more confused than ever. He knows that if he’s going to get her back, he’ll have to uncover the secret of this beach and the girls who live here—and find out what they want from him.

Critically acclaimed author Bennett Madison presents a darkly imaginative and painfully honest novel about oblivious parents, sibling rivalries, first loves...and mermaids. This modern reimagining is perfect for fans of the irreverent wit of Ned Vizzini and the seductive magic of Alex Flinn’s retold fairy tales.

My thoughts:  Ok, it's a reimagining of a fairy tale...so I'm all over it!  Love them.  And if I wasn't already excited, this quote from Publisher's Weekly has officially sold me: “Madison’s dreamlike prose imbues the most ordinary moments with cosmic significance.”

Amy's View: A Witch in Love by Ruth Warburton

A Witch in Love by Ruth Warburton
♦publisher: Hodder Children's
♦release date: July 5th, 2012
♦paperback, 416 pages
♦intended audience: Young adult
♦series: A Winter Trilogy, book 2
♦source: from publisher for honest review

Spoiler alert! Description and review may contain slight spoilers for book one in the series!
Anna still finds it hard to believe that Seth loves her and has vowed to suppress her powers, no matter what.

But magic – like love – is uncontrollable. It spills out with terrible consequences, and soon, Anna is being hunted.

Review:
A delightful, much anticipated, bewitching sequel to the British Witch in Winter Series. We find ourselves picking up the story 6 month after the first book ends where we still find Anna struggling in the midst of her magical gift and trying to suppress her ever-surfacing magical tendencies. And if that isn’t enough for a teenager to deal with, Anna still struggles with finding out if the love of her life, Seth, really does love her or is it still the silly remnants of the very first spell that she accidentally cast.

In this book Anna has to learn who she really is and embrace herself for the witch that she is within. But what happens to an unpracticed, unconfident witch trying to stay off the radar? Random snowfalls and electrical shocks, just to name a few.  But hiding magic won’t protect Anna, her home, or the boy she loves from the Malleus (a vicious group willing to do anything to rid the country of those suspected of witchcraft). Once Anna goes on a quest to find out who she really is and where she came from, her life starts to unravel in a dangerous mysterious way. Anna finds that not even magic can help her get out of this one and saving her life becomes her new number one focus. Anna will need to learn the greatest lesson of all and quick. Knowing who you are and trusting yourself and those that truly love you. Only then Anna can hopefully get herself out of the worse predicament that she has found herself in thus far. But will she learn that lesson in time or will her fear drive Seth, her father, and all her friends away leaving Anna at death's door in the hands of the Malleus?

Witch in Love is definitely action packed with a lot more twists and turns and drama with a force that propels you quickly through this second book of the series. Can’t wait to see how it all will end in her third installment.

For New Shelf Goodies, I'll be showing you what lovely books I acquired this week, whether from publishers, or the library, or from whatever half-crazed book-buying binge I happened to go on. :D (Inspired by Alea @ Pop Culture Junkie's This Week in Books & Tynga's Stacking the Shelves) The Weekly Nutshell will be just that...my week here at Stories & Sweeties, in a nutshell. Just one new addition to the goodies shelf this week!  I just couldn't resist:

Becky's View: The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater

The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater
♦publisher: Scholastic
♦release date: September 18, 2012
♦hardcover, 408 pages
♦intended audience: Young adult
♦series:  Raven Cycle, book 1
♦source: from publisher for honest review

“There are only two reasons a non-seer would see a spirit on St. Mark’s Eve,” Neeve said. “Either you’re his true love . . . or you killed him.”

It is freezing in the churchyard, even before the dead arrive.
Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be dead walk past. Blue herself never sees them—not until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks directly to her.

His name is Gansey, and Blue soon discovers that he is a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble.

But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can’t entirely explain. He has it all—family money, good looks, devoted friends—but he’s looking for much more than that. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Raven Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents all the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul who ranges from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher of the four, who notices many things but says very little.

For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She never thought this would be a problem. But now, as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she’s not so sure anymore.

Review: It's always exciting to see Maggie Stiefvater come out with something new. Her stories are always so imaginative, her writing so lyrical and beautiful.  I gleefully anticipated this new series from the moment I heard of it's existence, and even more so after seeing the incredibly unique cover.
And now that I've finished it and can think back on it as a whole, I can say that I really enjoyed it.  As a whole.  But...in all honestly, I have to admit that there were a few times that I very nearly put this one down.

The prologue and first chapter were perfection...eerie, dark, and utterly compelling.  I was drawn in and immediately convince that what lay ahead was going to blow me away.  But then, somehow, it just lost it's grip on me.  We're introduced to the main band of characters of the story: Blue and her family of psychic women, and of course, The  Raven Boys themselves: Gansey, Adam, Ronan, and Noah. We get glimpses into their lives, their personalities, their individual quirks, but for almost 120 pages, nothing really happens. At 50 pages, and then again at 100 pages, which are usually the two places that I give books to absolutely draw me in to the story---I stopped and didn't know if I wanted to continue.  I didn't care much for any of the characters at that point, they were mildly interesting but I just wasn't invested in what was going on.  But I pressed on---why?  Because it's Maggie Stiefvater.  I've loved her work before and I just couldn't give up.

I am glad I stuck with it. It may have taken until chapter 15, but from that point on, this story is pure magic.  What it took, for me, was for the character to come together.  Blue and the Raven Boys finally come together and the whole story just starts to come alive!  Eerie and magical things start to happen, a subtle but very sweet and unsure love story starts to blossom, and every one of the five of them just starts to show a side of themselves that you can't help love and feel compassion for.  It was like night and day.  Gansey, who at first seems cocky and pretentious and clueless about anything but his rich-boy life turns out to be smart, endearingly curious, and so caring about his friends---I think he surprised me the most throughout the story. The whole group of them all had their problems, but they were all so tightly bound together by their friendship that each of them was able to face it all with bravery.  And Blue was a firecracker---I love how well she was able to hold her own among this odd mix of boys and the even more bizarre group of women she had at home.

There are some really great creepy moments along the way as they search for a legendary lost king. The plot unfolds with much cleverness and mystery.  Ghosts, killers, visions, and magic among the trees---while this story may have taken a while to really get going for me, it took my breath away in the end.
