Gravemaidens Blog Tour: Interview with Kelly Coon!

Welcome, Readers!! So excited today to be part of the blog tour for

GRAVEMAIDENS

Have you plunged into this gorgeous fantasy yet?? Well now's the perfect time!! Full of danger, deathly ritual, sisterhood, and romance, this is a world you can easily get lost in.
Today I'm so pleased to have a fun interview with author Kelly Coon for you all!

Interview with Kelly Coon, author of Gravemaidens

•Describe Gravemaidens in 5 words:
Fierce females, friendship, perseverance, and hope! =)

•Who was your favorite Gravemaidens character to write---and who gave you the most trouble?
Iltani was absolutely my favorite to write. I wrote whatever popped into my head, whether it was sarcastic, mean, challenging, or witty. In real life, I have to bite my tongue a lot, but Iltani never has to. Haha! Sometimes, it’s fun to let loose, behave badly, and say exactly what you want to say, consequences or not.

It was tough for me to write Nanaea. She’s a little bit difficult to root for at first, because she’s so interested in the glamor and honor of being a Sacred Maiden, but once you get to know her (and pay attention to the clues), you’ll see why she really wants the honor and it might not be what you think. =)

• Where is your favorite writing spot? Coffee shop?  Kitchen table? In the park surrounded by people?
I write the best in my home office with all my notes and stuff around me. But, I can write anywhere. I’ve written in the car on a road trip—not driving, of course—in planes, at coffee shops, in restaurants, in the car while my sons are at different sports practices, and even on the treadmill, sweating onto my phone. haha

•What kind of books did you read as a teen?
I read anything I could get my hands on, but I read a TON of murder mysteries. My mom and grandpa, both of whom kind of inspired by love of reading, used to be into James Patterson, John Sanford, Jonathan Kellerman, and John D. McDonald. (That is a heck of a lot of Johns). I read every murder mystery in the library I could, and when I finished, my mom and grandpa and I would discuss.

In middle school, I read Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys, and the occasional romance novel I’d sneak in when my mom wasn’t paying attention. 😉

• Is there anyone special, a teacher or mentor, who inspired you on your path to becoming a writer?
I had two teachers specifically who believed that I would be published, and I held onto their belief with both of my hands.
In high school, I wrote a piece for a teacher named Dawn Wheeler to try to get on the yearbook staff. She pulled me out of another teacher’s class and was laughing so hard in the hallway I thought she was going to choke. She said, “You wrote a political satire. And it’s good!” She told me I’d made the yearbook staff with flying colors and that she was keeping that sheet of paper in case I ever became published. She made me feel like maybe I could be successful at this little hobby of mine.
In college, a professor named Dr. Jacob Blumner read one of my essays and kept me after class. He looked at me really thoughtfully and said, “You know, you’re gonna be published one day. I can already tell. Probably before you’re thirty.” Then he told me to stick with it because I had a gift. I didn’t get published before thirty—he was off by four years—but his belief in me really pulled me through some tough times.

Thank you so much, Kelly!

A Poison Dark and Drowning by Jessica Cluess {review}

Poison Dark and Drowning
by Jessica Cluess
♦publisher: Random House BFYR
♦release date: September 19th, 2017
♦hardcover, 432 pages
♦intended audience: Young adult
♦series: Kingdom of Fire, book 2
♦source: ARC from publisher for honest review

Henrietta doesn't need a prophecy to know that she's in danger. She came to London to be named the chosen one, the first female sorcerer in centuries, the one who would defeat the Ancients. Instead, she discovered a city ruled by secrets. And the biggest secret of all: Henrietta is not the chosen one.

Still, she must play the role in order to keep herself and Rook, her best friend and childhood love, safe. But can she truly save him? The poison in Rook's system is transforming him into something monstrous as he begins to master dark powers of his own. So when Henrietta finds a clue to the Ancients past that could turn the tide of the war, she persuades Blackwood, the mysterious Earl of Sorrow-Fell, to travel up the coast to seek out strange new weapons. And Magnus, the brave, reckless flirt who wants to win back her favor, is assigned to their mission. Together, they will face monsters, meet powerful new allies, and uncover the most devastating weapon of all: the truth.

Review: After reading and adoring A Shadow Bright and Burning last year, I eagerly jumped back into Henrietta Howel's enchanting and exciting story.

This time around, things take a little darker turn as Henrietta and Blackwood set off to find a way to defeat the Ancients in the oncoming war. They are some great new additions to the cast. With such a predominately testosterone-heavy group that Henrietta has had to deal with thus far, it was great to see the development of a strong friendship between Henrietta and Maria, a new witch that joins their group. Plus this girl is feisty, mysterious, and clever as can be in all her Scottish, ax-wielding glory!

The focus on this new friendship was a welcome departure as the confusing and sometimes frustratingly fickle love triangle Henrietta has going continues to be undecided (some would call it a love “square” but honestly, to me, even though she professes her undying love to Rook, he always seems too out of sight, out of mind to really be in the running lol). There's some slightly off-putting personality development with a character that was one of my favorites the first time around, so I'm wary to see how that will all end up in book 3.

Still, it all plays out secondary to the adventure as they come across new challenges and creatures, some exciting twists and astonishing discoveries. A great follow up that left me eager for the finale!

Waiting on Wednesday

"Waiting on Wednesday" is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. It lets us all gush about what soon-to-be released books we are jumping-up-and-down excited for.

by Rachel Hartman

hitting shelves Feb 27th, 2018
from Random House Book for Young Readers
In the medieval kingdom of Goredd, women are expected to be ladies, men are their protectors, and dragons get to be whomever they want. Tess, stubbornly, is a troublemaker. You can't make a scene at your sister's wedding and break a relative's nose with one punch (no matter how pompous he is) and not suffer the consequences. As her family plans to send her to a nunnery, Tess yanks on her boots and sets out on a journey across the Southlands, alone and pretending to be a boy.

Where Tess is headed is a mystery, even to her. So when she runs into an old friend, it's a stroke of luck. This friend is a quigutl--a subspecies of dragon--who gives her both a purpose and protection on the road. But Tess is guarding a troubling secret. Her tumultuous past is a heavy burden to carry, and the memories she's tried to forget threaten to expose her to the world in more ways than one.

Returning to the fascinating world she created in the award-winning and New York Times bestselling Seraphina, Rachel Hartman introduces readers to a new character and a new quest, pushing the boundaries of genre once again in this wholly original fantasy.

My thoughts: Ok, this sounds awesome and makes me want to go back and read Seraphina.  This isn't a sequel but a new character and adventure from the same world, so I love that I don't have to read the others. BUT, any Seraphina fans out there that want to convince me while I eagerly wait for this one?;) Loving this cover, too.

Poison's Kiss by Breeana Shields {guest review}

Poison's Kiss
by Breeana Shields
♦publisher: Random House BYR
♦release date: January 10th, 2017
♦hardcover, 304 pages
♦intended audience: Young adult
♦series: Poison's Kiss, book 1
♦source: from publisher for honest review
♦reviewed by: Amy

Marinda has kissed dozens of boys. They all die afterward. It's a miserable life, but being a visha kanya, a poison maiden, is what she was created to do. Marinda serves the Raja by dispatching his enemies with only her lips as a weapon.

Until now, the men she was ordered to kiss have been strangers, enemies of the kingdom. Then she receives orders to kiss Deven, a boy she knows too well to be convinced he needs to die. She begins to question who she s really working for. And that is a thread that, once pulled, will unravel more than she can afford to lose.

Review: Marinda is a lethal weapon and one kiss from her, is the last kiss you will ever have.

For Marinda, kissing and killing is the only life she has ever known. From childhood she was raised at the hand of cruel caretakers with ulterior motives; who trained and poisoned her until her kiss was poisonous enough to make her a visha kanya. Bound to serve the Raja, she must kill anyone who betrays the kingdom with her venomous kiss. To them she is merely a creation to do their bidding, leaving scars not even her sari can hide.

Lucky for Marinda, every man she’s killed has been a stranger, until she meets Deven; the charming, attentive boy at bookstore. And for the first time, Marinda can dream about love’s first kiss, if only it wasn’t deadly. Now, Miranda is left with a choice; follow through with her appointed duty, or risk betraying her kingdom to save the one she loves.

Caught between love, war, duty and family, Marinda is suddenly left questioning the one reason she was put on earth. Pondering if her caretakers are really who they claim to be, leaving her with the ultimate question of staying loyal to those who may be traitors, or watch it all fall for love.

Breena Shields captures the allure of Indian folklore in her thrilling debut, Poison’s Kiss. With treachery and love mixed in with surprising twists and turns, this book has everything you need for a riveting page-turner. Filled with exciting adventure, readers could be left with the desire for more detail to carry out the richness of the scenes, the settings, and the characters. Yet, the great fantasy elements and story building carries readers quickly through to the end.

With intense scenes and impressive writing, Breena Shield’s truly unique storyline gives this book strength and presence, while weaving in conflicts between right and wrong with deception and truth. Smooth as a serpent’s tongue, this remarkable tale will catch you unaware while leaving you anxiously waiting for the next book in the series.

Denton Little's Series Giveaway!!

Today's your chance to get to know Denton Little!! To celebrate the arrival of the second book, Denton Little's Still Not Dead
(and thanks to the wonderful folks at  Random House Kids!) I'm super excited to be able to give away THREE SETS of the awesome series by Lance Rubin!

Meet Denton in Denton Little's Deathdate:

Get ready to die laughing: this is an outrageously funny ride through the last hours of a teenager’s life as he searches for love, meaning, answers, and (just maybe) a way to live on.

Denton Little’s Deathdate takes place in a world exactly like our own except that everyone knows the day on which they will die. For Denton, that’s in just two days—the day of his senior prom.

Despite his early deathdate, Denton has always wanted to live a normal life, but his final days are filled with dramatic firsts. First hangover. First sex. First love triangle—as the first sex seems to have happened not with his adoring girlfriend, but with his best friend’s hostile sister. (Though he’s not totally sure—see, first hangover.) His anxiety builds when he discovers a strange purple rash making its way up his body. Is this what will kill him? And then a strange man shows up at his funeral, claiming to have known Denton’s long-deceased mother, and warning him to beware of suspicious government characters. . . . Suddenly Denton’s life is filled with mysterious questions and precious little time to find the answers.

And find out how his story continues in
Denton Little's Still Not Dead:

You only live once—unless you’re Denton Little!

The good news: Denton Little has lived through his deathdate. Yay! The bad news: He’s being chased by the DIA (Death Investigation Agency), he can never see his family again, and he may now die any time. Huh. Cheating death isn’t quite as awesome as Denton would have thought…

Lance Rubin’s debut novel, Denton Little’s Deathdate, showed readers just how funny and poignant imminent death could be. Now in this sequel, he takes on the big questions about life. How do we cope, knowing we could die at any time? Would you save someone from dying even if they were a horrible person? Is it wrong to kiss the girl your best friend is crushing on if she’s really into you instead? What if she’s wearing bacon lip gloss?

•ABOUT THE AUTHOR•

Lance Rubin is the author of Denton Little’s Deathdate. He’s worked as an actor and written sketch comedy, including successful runs of The Lance and Ray Show at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York City. He’s also co-written a new musical called Broadway Bounty Hunter. Lance lives in Brooklyn with his wife and son. He is very glad he doesn’t know his deathdate.

Sweetness (& GLITTER!) on Sunday

Something a little special for you today, readers!! And something I'm particularly proud of!  I'm sure most of you have seen this gorgeous cover. This book with it's bright bold shocks of color, it's nod to Marie Antoinette, and it's very bizarre twist on Versaille court-life---the second I saw it, I wanted nothing more than to make french macarons to match!! :D Now, I'm a fairly skilled baker, if I do say so myself, but these blasted cookies have continually eluded me. I've had three failed attempts to get them to come out looking pretty AND achieving the perfect texture balance of crisp on the outside, chewy on the inside. Well, inspired by this desire to make the cover-inspired cookies, I decided to give them yet another try. And LOOK!! :D I did it! ♥♥♥

As for the recipe, I'm actually just going to point you right to the blog that helped me finally achieve this success. The tips I learned here were invaluable and when followed to the tee, I think they will give anyone brave enough to attempt them, a beautiful batch of french macarons! Check it out here:
http://entertainingwithbeth.com/foolproof-french-macaron-recipe/

I filled these with a lemon buttercream filling:
•2 sticks of room-temperature butter
•4 cups of powdered sugar
•1 tsp vanilla
•1/4 tsp salt
•lemon extract, 1-2 tsp (add a little at a time until you get your preferred flavor!)
Mix all ingredients in a stand mixer for 5 minutes or until light and fluffy, scraping down sides of bowl often. Pipe or use a teaspoon to drop a mound of buttercream onto one side of each macaron shell. Sandwich two shells together.  For these, I also dusted the buttercream edges with purple edible glitter to bring in the colors of the book cover :D

That's all there is to it!! Bon appetit!

Outside the palace of Versailles, it’s modern day. Inside, the people dress, eat, and act like it’s the eighteenth century—with the added bonus of technology to make court life lavish, privileged, and frivolous. The palace has every indulgence, but for one pretty young thing, it’s about to become a very beautiful prison.

When Danica witnesses an act of murder by the young king, her mother makes a cruel power play . . . blackmailing the king into making Dani his queen. When she turns eighteen, Dani will marry the most ruthless and dangerous man of the court. She has six months to escape her terrifying destiny. Six months to raise enough money to disappear into the real world beyond the palace gates.

Her ticket out? Glitter. A drug so powerful that a tiny pinch mixed into a pot of rouge or lip gloss can make the wearer hopelessly addicted. Addicted to a drug Dani can sell for more money than she ever dreamed.

But in Versailles, secrets are impossible to keep. And the most dangerous secret—falling for a drug dealer outside the palace walls—is one risk she has to take.

A Shadow Bright and Burning by Jessica Cluess {review}

A Shadow Bright and Burning
by Jessica Cluess

♦hardcover, 416 pages
♦intended audience: Young adult
♦series: Kingdom of Fire, book 1

I am Henrietta Howel.
The first female sorcerer in hundreds of years.
The prophesied one.
Or am I?

Henrietta Howel can burst into flames.

Forced to reveal her power to save a friend, she's shocked when instead of being executed, she's invited to train as one of Her Majesty's royal sorcerers.

Thrust into the glamour of Victorian London, Henrietta is declared the chosen one, the girl who will defeat the Ancients, bloodthirsty demons terrorizing humanity. She also meets her fellow sorcerer trainees, handsome young men eager to test her power and her heart. One will challenge her. One will fight for her. One will betray her.

But Henrietta Howel is not the chosen one.

As she plays a dangerous game of deception, she discovers that the sorcerers have their own secrets to protect. With battle looming, what does it mean to not be the one? And how much will she risk to save the city—and the one she loves?

Review: This story is quite literally exciting and fun from start to finish. I really, really enjoyed every moment. There were some fantastic shocking twists, and even a moment I gasped so loud, my daughter came out of her room to check on me. xD  I loved the very non-stuffy alternate-London Victorian setting, I loved the characters (well, some are more of a "love to hate" thing) and I think this is a great start to an exciting new series.

Henrietta is a character to root for. She has this incredible power, but it's Victorian London, so even when she is brought into the school to train, she is constantly having to prove herself among the men. She is feisty and knew what she needed to do---and I loved that when "their way" with magic doesn't quite work for her, she finds a way of her own to still accomplish the same goal, even when she knows the truth could derail everything.

Those who are wary of love triangles or any sort of multiple-option love interests are probably going to have a field day with this romance. I myself really enjoyed it. It's not a huge part of the story---and I loved that Henrietta's focus really stays mostly on becoming a commended sorcerer and getting a better life for her and her friend Rook.  I loved that there were lots of growing and changing friendships among them, some definite up and downs in each relationship, and one..no actually two, that I just wished they had stayed friends and only friends. By the end, there was only one that I personally wanted to see her end up with, if she ends up with anyone at all. But that could all change in the coming installments, of course!

One thing I did want for in this was just a little more "why" and "how" when it came to the Ancients. I felt a lot of details about the lore and why they did what they did and how they worked was kind of skimmed over as we were thrown right into the action of fighting them off. I'm hoping for a little more clarity on that end in the future of this series. I did however, love the history that was given of the sorcerers vs. magicians, and am hoping for a more in-depth look at that, too!

A fantastic and breath-taking debut and one that I will definitely be counting down the days to book 2 for!!
