“People will die.”

Locked doors are opening, and uncanny creatures are tumbling through mysterious portals from Mag Mell, the world-between-worlds, into the streets of Chicago. The Dark Man has marked Aiden with a new song that’s scared him badly, and a frightening new group of sídhe is lurking nearby.

Teagan knows this is war, and she must protect her family. She leaves her flesh and bones behind to join Finn in hunting the evil beings across the city. Meanwhile, their relationship is heating up—almost faster than they can control. But he is still bound to fight goblins his entire life . . . and by blood she is one of them now.

Then the gateway to Mag Mell cracks open again, and the Wylltsons find themselves caught in a trap. As her loved ones begin to die, Teagan realizes that she must destroy the Dark Man and his minions once and for all in order to save those who remain . . .

. . . before it is too late.

Review: Bringing one of my favorite recent series to a close, When the Stars Threw Down Their Spears picks up right where the last book left off and finds Teagan, Finn, Aiden and the rest of the massive cast of characters preparing for their next move to take down Mab, Fear Doirich, and save the magical land of Mag Mell.

While admittedly, this was my least favorite of the three, it was still great fun to be back with these incredible characters.  There are so many---sometimes it was tough to remember who was who with all the unusual names (and species!), especially after being away from this world for a year.  I would definitely recommend rereading the first two for a refresher, or better yet if you haven’t started the series to read them all at once!  The first 100 or so pages did feel a bit slow, most of it taking place in and around Teagan’s house as the group speculates on new and old dilemmas and prepares for the building danger and their plan of attack.

Despite the danger getting more and more severe, you’ll still find the same great humor and heart throughout the story, with Teagan reaching out to help even the nastiest of creatures, Finn fighting back his fate to be who and what he wants despite his legacy, Lucy and Aiden in all kinds of mischief,…even Mrs. Santini, the nosy neighbor from across the street, has her great shining moments this time around.  There are a few new faces, some not so welcome, and some that will help save them all in the end.  With the climactic onset of the war, there are some shockingly heartbreaking moments of betrayal and some very heavy losses.  Hamilton definitely doesn’t patronize us with a sappy happy ending, but gives us the gritty, heart-wrenching, and hard-won triumph that this fantastic adventure deserves.

Cool trailer contest from Kersten Hamilton!

Ok, guys, this is awesome. I came across this at Tyger, Tyger author, Kersten Hamilton's website while looking for news about the second book.

I'm sure we all know how threatened our libraries are with all the budget cuts going on. I've seen jobs lost, materials and programming budgets cut severely, and even seen libraries forced to close for months at time. Every little bit helps, and Kersten came up with a fantastic idea to give back. She is holding a trailer contest for Book 2, In the Forest of the Night. The first prize winner will win a very generous $1000 to be donated to the library of their choice, plus two second place prizes of $500 each donated to a library of choice. Wow..that is so cool. My love for this author just quadrupled. For all of you amazing trailer creators out there, go for it!

Cover Story: In the Forest of the Night (Tyger, Tyger #2)

I was so excited to just discover this on Goodreads!! Tyger, Tyger was one of my favorites last year, and I cannot wait for the second book. Take a look at this cover of gorgeousness!
Bring on more Teagan and Finn!! And Aidan, too! :D

In the Forest of the Night by Kersten Hamilton

Teagan, Finn, and Aiden have made it out of Mag Mell alive, but the Dark Man's forces are hot on their heels. Back in Chicago, Tea’s goblin cousins show up at her school, sure she will come back to Mag Mell, as goblin blood is never passive once awoken. Soon she will belong to Fear Doirich and join them. In the meantime, they are happy to entertain themselves by trying to seduce, kidnap, or kill Tea’s family and friends.
Teagan knows she doesn’t have much time left, and she refuses to leave Finn or her family to be tortured and killed. A wild Stormrider, born to rule and reign, is growing stronger inside her. But as long as she can hold on, she’s still Teagan Wylltson, who plans to be a veterinarian and who heals the sick and hurting. The disease that’s destroying her—that’s destroying them all—has a name: Fear Doirich.
And Teagan Wylltson is not going to let him win.

Persnickety Snark's FIVE challenge 2010 - Great Debuts

Adele over at Persnickety Snark is hosting a great challenge over at her blog where participants post their top 5 selections in different aspects of YA (series, cover, debuts, etc.) for 2010 releases. You can find out the details in her post here. I just found out about this today so while I probably won't be able to participate in every single challenge due to the fuss of the holidays, I'm going to give it my best shot to complete as many of them as I can!! :)

Today's top 5 is about GREAT DEBUTS of 2010! And, man, were there a lot of great debuts this year. Paring this list down was hard, but here are my top five:

Shadow Hills by Anastasia Hopcus

This one is in my top five books of the year, debut or not. I loved this book with it's hint of mystery, it's unique take on the paranormal and Anastasia's amazing writing style. See my full review here.

Paranormalcy by Kiersten White

Even before this one came out, I couldn't wait to read it because a)the cover is to-die-for gorgeous, and b) I'd already gotten hooked on Kiersten White's hilarious blog posts. In my mind, someone who writes such an entertaining blog couldn't possible put out a book that was less than amazing! Which it was! See my review here.

Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins

This book was such a fun one...it had a little of everything: an intriguing storyline, fun well-written characters, lots of good spooky moments, and the perfect amount of romance. I have the second book sitting here on my shelf and I can't wait to get to it!!
See my full review here.

Jane by April Lindner

Jane was amazing. I went in blind---having never read Jane Eyre before, but this one completely enthralled me. The characters were complex and fascinating. The way Lindner brought the age-old story so seamlessly into the modern age was perfect. If you haven't read this already, do so asap, I tell you! See my full review here.

Tyger Tyger by Kersten Hamilton

I just read this one recently so it's still fresh in my mind, but honestly---I think it will stay that way for awhile! Amazing storytelling, a sweet romantic undercurrent, danger, Irish mythology,...but my favorite part of the story was the relationship between the main character, Teagan, and her little brother, Aiden. Brilliant stuff! See my full review here.

Review: Tyger Tyger

Tyger Tyger by Kersten Hamilton

publisher: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt

released November 9, 2010

hardcover, 322 pages

intended audience: Young adult

source: From publisher through Netgalley

rating:

description:
Teagan Wylltson's best friend, Abby, dreams that horrifying creatures--goblins, shape-shifters, and beings of unearthly beauty but terrible cruelty--are hunting Teagan. Abby is always coming up with crazy stuff, though, so Teagan isn't worried. Her life isn't in danger. In fact, it's perfect. She's on track for a college scholarship. She has a great job. She's focused on school, work, and her future. No boys, no heartaches, no problems.
Until Finn Mac Cumhaill arrives. Finn's a bit on the unearthly beautiful side himself. He has a killer accent and a knee-weakening smile. And either he's crazy or he's been haunting Abby's dreams, because he's talking about goblins, too . . . and about being The Mac Cumhaill, born to fight all goblin-kind. Finn knows a thing or two about fighting. Which is a very good thing, because this time, Abby's right. The goblins are coming.

Review: I'm always game for a good jaunt into the world of fairies, goblins, and other fantastical creatures. I've read all kinds of these books, there are ton of them out there in YA and MG fiction. Tyger Tyger, however, was exceptional. I loved it. The story has it all: action, heartbreak, Irish mythology, lots of danger, and a somewhat subdued love story that I'm sure we'll get to indulge in more in the follow-up books to this series! I can't wait!

I love how the story unfolded. First you meet Teagan; she is just a normal girl with a strong sense of where she wants to go in life, hard-working and focused on her goals. The relationship between her and her little brother, Aiden, was one of the best parts of the book. I really loved how they spoke sign language to eachother, and it definitely came in handy in dangerous times! The truth about who they are and who Finn is, and why they are all mixed up in this dangerous legendary world reveals itself at such a perfect pace that this book never dropped my attention. I was engaged all the way through!

I became endeared to so many characters in this book, the kind of characters you never forget: Teagan, Aiden, Finn, Mamieo, Raynor Shine, even Mrs. Santini...by the end of the book, each one had won a special place in my heart. They each had their strengths and weaknesses, but all knew what had to be done to make it through this adventure and it was done with bravery and selflessness, without a second thought.

As you can tell, I cannot recommend this book enough! If you haven't picked this one up, run out and get it now!! :)
