Super Six Sunday: My six favorite author encounters!!

Super Six Sunday is a meme hosted by the fabulous Bewitched Bookworms. Join in the fun...see upcoming themes here!!

One of the most exciting things about being a book blogger and all-round book lover is meeting the wonderful people who give us these amazing stories to read.
In the past three years, I've definitely been lucky in being able to meet some of my very favorites.  Here are my top 6!!

Anna Carey
Such a sweet person to chat with. When I met her I had recently interviewed her on the blog and she remembered the cupcake question.  She signed my book "To Becky, My Sweetie!" :D

 Stephanie Perkins
This girl has so much fun energy!  I saw her and Maureen Johnson together in San Francisco and they both looked like there were have a blast together.

Tahereh Mafi
If you ever have a chance to meet this amazing author, TAKE IT.  She is so inspiring and fun to hear speak.

Jackson Pearce
I got meet Jackson Pearce at ALA. She is one of my favorites, so I was just so greatful to finally catch her on one of her rare visits to the west coast!

Ransom Riggs
Another amazing author to hear speak. SO much great writing advice and lots of funny stories. That's Michelle Gagnon and Tahereh Mafi on either side of him, and the three of them together were hilarious.

Kendare Blake
I met Kendare at ALA last year and her's was my most-wanted book at the conference.  I think she was the first author to tell me she knew my blog so you can image just how much that made my day!!

So that's my list!!  It's always fun to meet great our favorite authors and I hope I can meet many more in the coming years! :)

it's almost

time for war.

Juliette has escaped to Omega Point. It is a place for people like her—people with gifts—and it is also the headquarters of the rebel resistance.

She's finally free from The Reestablishment, free from their plan to use her as a weapon, and free to love Adam. But Juliette will never be free from her lethal touch.

Or from Warner, who wants Juliette more than she ever thought possible.

In this exhilarating sequel to Shatter Me, Juliette has to make life-changing decisions between what she wants and what she thinks is right. Decisions that might involve choosing between her heart—and Adam's life.

Review: So many emotions.  This series continues with the same raw intensity that Tahereh Mafi astonished us with in Shatter Me.  The way she structures her sentences, the strike-throughs (used slightly more sparingly this time around), the repetition---Mafi uses her signature writing style to convey an absolutely palpable intensity and emotion that runs through each page like a pulse.

The story picks up right where Shatter Me ends, with Juliette trying to settle in to Omega Point, and you can really see her trying to get comfortable enough with herself to let other people in.  Being rejected and feared is all she knows, and it's hard for her to overcome that, especially when her powers are spinning a bit out of control, despite Castle's insistence that she learn how to use them to her (and Omega Point's) advantage.  Her struggle continues on how she feels about her own power and whether she wants anyone, even the good guys, to use it against their enemies.

The love story also takes a wild, heartbreaking spin as they discover more about Adam's own power to touch Juliette.  For those who have aversions to love triangles (they don't really bother me if they are well done), there is definitely one here, so be prepared.  It was definitely hard for me in the beginning to even consider Warner a viable love interest---his past actions were just too unforgiveable.   Still, Juliette's compassion for a boy raised by a heartless, cruel hand (much like herself) gets the best of her and she definitely lets her guard down for Warner. His actions this time around soften his character a bit and that definitely gives him some much needed vulnerability, humanity, and interest beyond the cruel leader we saw before. But I definitely reserve judgement on him until the end.  Great, great character development in this one. Some may be Team Adam, some may fall into Team Warner. As for me...I'm Team Kenji, all the way!! Kenji is an outstanding character.  I don't actually remember much about him in book one, but in Unravel Me, I thought he completely stole the show..  Not as a love interest, of course, since it just isn't there for him and Juliette, but best all-around character: courageous, outspoken, brilliant, caring, and absolutely hilarious.  His relationship with Juliet is perfect, showing good friendship, encouragement, and bit of tough love when needed.

The style, I have to mention again is just so distinctive---and while in one or two scenes, it gets to be just too much, just one step over the line into being slightly overdone and overdramatic, for most of this wild ride, it holds the reader completely captive.  With an ending that may very well explode your heart and the promise of one heck of a war on the horizon for these great characters, Unravel Me will leave you dying for the next book in this series.

How to Eat a Pomegranate with Tahereh Mafi

I have to share this with my fellow Shatter Me fans.  Because it's hilarious. Because Tahereh Mafi is awesome. Because the ending made my jaw drop and then bust up laughing.

Enjoy.

(Oh, and make sure you turn captions on!)

This video decided it for me...I'm reading Unravel Me next. :D

Shatter Me Series News from Tahereh Mafi!!

Ok, for all my blog readers who don't follow Tahereh Mafi's blog (why the heck not? The girl is so funny!), I wanted to share this with you. Miss Mafi imparted some awesome news for those of us who are dying for more of this series and are impatiently suffering because book 2's release date was pushed back until February of 2013. Ugh.

But here it is...I'll let Tahereh tell you herself:

Awesome, right?? :D

Dark Days of Winter 2012 - San Francisco Stop!

This week, I had the absolute thrill of attending the San Francisco stop of the Dark Days of Winters tour!! It was completely amazing! The event took place at Books, Inc at Opera Plaza---a great indie bookstore with so much character and an awesome staff. This is the second event I've attended there and I am always so impressed with how well run the event is and how well attended! With such amazing authors, and surprise drop in by Anna Carey, author of Eve---you can bet they had a packed house!

The event featured Ellen Schrieber, Tahereh Mafi, Veronica Rossi, and Anna Carey. All four authors did such a great Q & A where they discussed everything from their inspirations, research methods, creating worlds, and the blessing of a good copy editor. When the questions wound down, they all graciously visited with the fans, smiled pretty for photographs, and signed tons of books, bookmarks, and even a personal journal!

One of the big highlights of my time there was being the official live blogger! I live-tweeted the entire thing during the event and got to do a quick interview with the authors! Here's a video of a few of the questions---we had some "technical difficulties" so we missed the first part of it, and the sound is a bit low (LOL, it was my first time doing anything like this!). So turn up the volume and take a look :)
I also brought my best friend and pro photographer, Amy, with me to capture some cool pics! So, to show all the great shots she got of the event, I've made a little slideshow, featuring a song that will probably age me, but that I thought fit perfectly with the apocalyptic theme of Shatter Me, Under the Never Sky, and Eve! :D Some things to watch for:  invaded chocolates & and proof that authors know how to accessorize!
Find out more about the Dark Days Tour at Dark Days Central! I hope you all get a chance to catch one of these tour stops! They are a blast!!
