Keeper of the Bees by Meg Kassel {review}

by Meg Kassel
♦publisher: Entangled Teen
♦release date: Septemeber 4th, 2018
♦hardcover, 304 pages
♦intended audience: Young adult
♦series: companion to Black Bird of the Gallows
♦source: from publisher for review consideration
KEEPER OF THE BEES is a tale of two teens who are both beautiful and beastly, and whose pasts are entangled in surprising and heartbreaking ways.

Dresden is cursed. His chest houses a hive of bees that he can’t stop from stinging people with psychosis-inducing venom. His face is a shifting montage of all the people who have died because of those stings. And he has been this way for centuries—since he was eighteen and magic flowed through his homeland, corrupting its people.

He follows harbingers of death, so at least his curse only affects those about to die anyway. But when he arrives in a Midwest town marked for death, he encounters Essie, a seventeen-year-old girl who suffers from debilitating delusions and hallucinations. His bees want to sting her on sight. But Essie doesn’t see a monster when she looks at Dresden.

Essie is fascinated and delighted by his changing features. Risking his own life, he holds back his bees and spares her. What starts out as a simple act of mercy ends up unraveling Dresden’s solitary life and Essie’s tormented one. Their impossible romance might even be powerful enough to unravel a centuries-old curse.

{Becky's Thoughts}

I could not have been more enthralled by this book!
This second story by author Meg Kassel plunges us back in to the world she first introduced in Black Bird of the Gallows. It's a spin off that takes us deeper into the lives of the ominous beekeepers and harbinger crows that follow disaster from town to town, feeding off human fear and death. And while I really enjoyed Black Bird of the Gallows, I loved Keeper of the Bees so much. A rich Beauty and the Beast type story, where the true spin is that both of our main characters have beauty and beastliness in them. Both of them will face down their curses and find each other waiting at the end of the battle.

Who knew I could ever be enchanted by a character who shoots bees from his mouth?? 😄Dresden is a beekeeper, the bees inside him sting a person and turn them dark and violent. His face morphs between the faces of all his victims, but Dresden remembers who he once was, and there is kindness and compassion and humanity in him that makes him hate what he is. It's that compassion that lets him see into the gentle soul of a girl who struggles with the delusions and hallucinations. Essie is shunned in her town because of her family's "curse"--- a mental illness that seems to have been passed down through generations. She doesn't know what to make of Dresden with his changing faces and bees---it intrigues her more than anything else. Both of them seem fascinated that the other can see past what others see and assume of them, so they find themselves drawn together. There was such a sweetness to this love story.  I love how the mental illness was handled--Essie knows how sick she is, but aside from sometimes being scared by her hallucinations, she doesn't fear it or feel shame or spite. It is what is it is and she owns it with grace.

There is one truly terrifying new addition to the supernatural world in this story. The Strawman sent shivers down my spine at his every appearance, but even this chill-inducing creature is written with such great complexity. And there is one other that absolutely had my skin crawling---but you'll have to read to find out more!

There is so much heart to this story. Both Essie and Dresden have such challenges to face on their own, but they strengthen each other so much in coming together. And I have to say, Meg Kassel knows how to write a crazy twist ending that will leave her readers breathless. Pick this one up asap---it's perfect for Halloween (or anytime!).

In 1898 London, a magician has just performed the greatest illusion the world has ever seen. Intent on stealing his secrets, another magician sends his apprentice, Saverio, to befriend his rival’s apprentice, Thomas. Get close. Learn the trick. Get out.

But Sav is not a card to be played. He has a plan of his own: abscond with every secret for himself so he can finally step out of his master’s shadow and become the world’s most famous magician.

Then Sav discovers the truth—that Thomas performs real magic and is responsible for his master’s “illusions.” This trick cannot be stolen or duplicated. And worse, Sav finds himself falling hard for Thomas, the one person who can never discover his true purpose.

Their forbidden romance sets off a domino effect of dangerous consequences that will leave their love—and their lives—hanging in the balance.

My thoughts:  I love when stage magic and real magic collide, don't you? It has me very curious about this one! Plus Victorian London, forbidden romance, secrets and danger!! Sounds like a great story!

Bring Me Their Hearts by Sara Wolf {review}

Bring Me Their Hearts

♦series: Bring Me Their Hearts, book 1

Zera is a Heartless – the immortal, unageing soldier of a witch. Bound to the witch Nightsinger ever since she saved her from the bandits who murdered her family, Zera longs for freedom from the woods they hide in. With her heart in a jar under Nightsinger’s control, she serves the witch unquestioningly.

Until Nightsinger asks Zera for a Prince’s heart in exchange for her own, with one addendum; if she’s discovered infiltrating the court, Nightsinger will destroy her heart rather than see her tortured by the witch-hating nobles.

Crown Prince Lucien d’Malvane hates the royal court as much as it loves him – every tutor too afraid to correct him and every girl jockeying for a place at his darkly handsome side. No one can challenge him – until the arrival of Lady Zera. She’s inelegant, smart-mouthed, carefree, and out for his blood. The Prince’s honor has him quickly aiming for her throat.

So begins a game of cat and mouse between a girl with nothing to lose and a boy who has it all.

Winner takes the loser’s heart.

Literally.

{My thoughts}

Readers, Bring Me Their Hearts is exactly how I like my fantasy: a little on the lighter side, great complicated characters, some imaginative world-building, and a few great laughs.  This book was such a fun adventure and I left me absolutely dying for more.

So, see that smirk on the cover? It pretty much sums up the main character Zera to perfection. So. Much. Sass. But luckily that's not all there is to her. Nobody likes a wise-ass without a little depth and sinister backstory, right? Zera is a Heartless, which means she was created by and serves a witch, has a ragingly violent inner impulse, and a very bloody diet. The Witches decide to use her in a plot to gain the upper hand in their war and are willing to give her and her friends their freedom if she succeeds. So off to court she goes, to win the heart of the prince...and rip it out of his chest and turn him Heartless, too.

I loved the way this world and society is built--very fantastical with a little steampunk and alchemy mixed in. While there are some details that left me a little confused, I really can't wait to be even further immersed into it's inner workings as the series continues. The villain was just a little two dimensional, but every single other character was absolutely intriguing, even those like the King who we only get a brief glimpse of. Once Zera meets Lucien, so begins the incredible conflict...will she kill him or won't she? It's a high price for her either way.  Lucien matches her in wit 100% and it was wildly entertaining watching each and every one of their interactions. His guard is also hilariously snarky and turned out to be one of my favorite characters. I could go on, there are several other noteworthy characters, but I'll leave them for you to discover!

The ending, ahh, the ending. Be prepared, it's one heck of a cliffhanger---literally had me clutching the pages hard enough to wrinkle them and in the last moment all I could say was "WHAT???" (In a good way! In a "please, book, don't rip my heart out this way" kind of way) Needless to say, I need book two right now. :)

By A Charm and A Curse by Jaime Questell {review}

Le Grand’s Carnival Fantastic isn’t like other traveling circuses. It’s bound by a charm, held together by a centuries-old curse, that protects its members from ever growing older or getting hurt. Emmaline King is drawn to the circus like a moth to a flame…and unwittingly recruited into its folds by a mysterious teen boy whose kiss is as cold as ice.

Forced to travel through Texas as the new Girl in the Box, Emmaline is completely trapped. Breaking the curse seems like her only chance at freedom, but with no curse, there’s no charm, either—dooming everyone who calls the Carnival Fantastic home. Including the boy
she’s afraid she’s falling for.

Everything—including his life—could end with just one kiss.

{Amy's Thoughts}

Unique and truly original, By A Charm and A Curse keeps all the wonderment of the circus, but also adds to it a sense of danger and mystique. With a stage of strong characters, and a story that has deep roots, readers will quickly fall for this one.

Told in two alternating voices, you will be able to see the circus from both sides.  One voice, who’s unknowing sacrifice throws her into the harsh life of the circus changing it forever, while the other one calls the circus and all its many secrets home.  This opens the storyline for forbidden romance, secrets, and lies while also setting the scene for betrayal and the choice between family and love.

Jamie Quenstell, portrays circus life in a believable manner, as one large dysfunctional family that ultimately needs each other to survive, unwilling to add an outsider to the mix, making Emma’s forced transition into the circus one filled with angst and uncertainty.   Quenstell’s writing is well rounded, delicately building the tempo as she goes, giving you a multitude of vessels to think about all at the same time, while also not giving you a one-stop solution to a problem.  Jamie Quenstell gets it right, with a fully developed storyline, strong characters, and without any structural flaws.

Like a lone Ferris Wheel spinning at night, this book catches you eerily unaware, taking you within its grasp.  If only it came with a faint smell of cotton candy, and the carnival music playing in the distance.

Camellia Beauregard is a Belle. In the opulent world of Orléans, Belles are revered, for they control Beauty, and Beauty is a commodity coveted above all else. In Orléans, the people are born gray, they are born damned, and only with the help of a Belle and her talents can they transform and be made beautiful.

But it’s not enough for Camellia to be just a Belle. She wants to be the favorite—the Belle chosen by the Queen of Orléans to live in the royal palace, to tend to the royal family and their court, to be recognized as the most talented Belle in the land. But once Camellia and her Belle sisters arrive at court, it becomes clear that being the favorite is not everything she always dreamed it would be. Behind the gilded palace walls live dark secrets, and Camellia soon learns that the very essence of her existence is a lie—that her powers are far greater, and could be more dangerous, than she ever imagined. And when the queen asks Camellia to risk her own life and help the ailing princess by using Belle powers in unintended ways, Camellia now faces an impossible decision.

With the future of Orléans and its people at stake, Camellia must decide—save herself and her sisters and the way of the Belles—or resuscitate the princess, risk her own life, and change the ways of her world forever.

{Amy's Thoughts}
Romance, murder and the swamp all tie together to make Okefenokee swamp heat up more than the sweltering Georgia heat.  Wicked Charm, takes you right into the heart of the swamplands, creating an atmosphere that is so thick it’s hard to catch your breath. Amber Hart, takes you into sweet tea afternoons with mosquitos buzzing, and  sinking mud, and alligators sunning themselves along the  thicket of trees that line the swamp.

Told in two perspectives, you are given insight on both sides of the story, weaving in and out of the two main character’s minds.This book is a fast read with plenty of dialogue, as well as a backstory that could be it’s own book, giving depth to characters that wouldn’t really be noticed otherwise. Not sure if you could desire a thriller as charming and sweet, but the main characters are written with such ease and genuineness that you can’t help but want to sit alongside them with a tall glass of sweet tea.

 The perfect introductory read for anyone who wants to try a thriller, but might be a little apprehensive. This story has the elements without being scary, or over descriptive with gore. Faster than an alligator’s jaws, the truth swipes at you with one quick bite, leaving readers shocked in the end.

Waiting on Wednesday

"Waiting on Wednesday" is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. It lets us all gush about what soon-to-be released books we are jumping-up-and-down excited for.

*A little note*
 I decided to throw a linky down below for anyone who'd like to use it to hop around to other WoW posts.  The Waiting on Wednesday meme is still very much credited to Jill @ Breaking the Spine, but with the current linky at her site stretching to well over 1300 links, I thought it might be nice to have a fresh one.  This is just for the time being, and I'll do it weekly if it's something people want to use. And of course, I'll discontinue as soon as Jill returns!

Goodreads:
Pitched in the vein of Maggie Stiefvater meets Tim Burton, in which a teen girl is entrapped by a cursed carnival when a kiss turns her into a living doll, and must figure out how to break the decades-old curse so she can become human again — without destroying the carnival (and the boy) she's growing to love in the process.

Edelweiss:
The Night Circus meets Tim Burton in this enthralling debut.
LeGrand’s Carnival Fantastic isn’t like other traveling circuses. It’s bound by a charm, held together by a centuries-old curse, that protects its members from ever growing older. Seventeen-year-old Emmaline King is drawn to the circus like a moth to a flame…and unwittingly recruited into its folds by a mysterious teen boy whose kiss is as cold as ice.

Forced to travel through Texas as the new Girl In the Box, passing out fortunes and searching for the poor soul she can transfer the curse to with one frosty kiss, Emmaline begins to fall for the quiet carnival carpenter Ben Singer. Ben is just as desperate to start a life outside the carnival as Emmaline is to escape her destiny—but giving in to their undeniable attraction means Ben’s fate would be sealed.

Breaking the curse seems like their only chance at happiness—but no curse means no charm, either, dooming every circus worker they’ve grown to care about in the process.

My thoughts:  So..I had to include both available descriptions. The EW one gives a little more indepth info, but OMG that one important detail we get from the GR description! She gets turned into a living doll???  I've suddenly got all the creepy Coraline shivers, not to mention Doctor Who (if you're a fan, you're sure to know the episode I mean xD). Plus, AMAZING cover, cool carnival setting (still irresistable even though it's everywhere), and chilling curses. Yep, I'm excited for this one.

What book are you eagerly anticipating this week?
