Review: I'd been looking forward to reading The Epic Crush of Genie Lo since first hearing about it months ago and when it popped up as a new title on Audible I decided to try out the audiobook. Good call. The reader was great and I think this exciting and visual story really lent itself well to being read out loud. This was such a fun story---think Scott Pilgrim heavily steeped in ancient Chinese mythology.  Which brings me to another great reason for going the audiobook route---the narrator is Chinese actress Nancy Wu, so it was awesome to hear all the language and know it was pronounced correctly. Who knows what kind of crazy mispronunciations I would have come up with trying to read it myself xD. It made experiencing this story and all of it's inlaid myths and legends all the more immersive and fun.

As for the story itself--okay, it was a little cheesy at times, but still so fun. Genie had a great sarcastic humor to her character and despite some confidence hurdles to overcome, still managed to become a badass and own the fate she was handed AND keep hold on the fact that she couldn't let all this demon business come between her and her college goals. Loved that.  Her and Quentin had a great bantery chemistry, but I'm not sure I was ever quite feeling the romantic spark between them. I also really felt for Genie as she tried to hold her normal teen life, friendships and her already straining family together through it all. 

The whole things was super fast paced---I don't remember even one dragging moment. An exciting superhero story with a few fun (maybe a little predictable at times) twists. For me, it felt genuine and rang true where it needed to, but also was wild and over-the-top like any good superhero story has every right to be LOL. 

I definitely recommend this one as a fast, fun read, and if you can, definitely go for the audiobook.

My thoughts: I really enjoyed the first book in this series!  If you haven't read it, you can check out my review here.  With the way things were unfolding by the end of Empress, I'm super excited to see where it leads!!

Cover Story - TIMEKEEPER & CHAINBREAKER

GUYS. Today I feel absolutely compelled by the gorgeousness of these covers to share them with you!  As you can see from HERE and HERE,  Tara Sim's debut Timekeeper was one of my favorites of last year. SO exciting, unique, romantic, magical, steampunk...everything. Well, the sequel hits shelves this November, and as you can imagine, I am dying to get it in my hands!! I've also been eagerly anticipating the cover of book two, hounding the author's tweets and goodreads on a near daily basis (because you have to agree--three months prior to publication IS rather late in the game for a  cover reveal! LOL).  BUT guys, I am here to tell you---it was worth the wait.  Bustle revealed the glorious cover just yesterday, along with a redesign of Timekeeper. I don't think I've ever loved a redesign more (and if you've ever seen my Old Books, New Looks feature, you'll know I can be a bit nitpicky about them haha).  Here's the original (which quite honestly, I liked but always thought it was a bit drab).   (Also, sorry for my ridiculous overuse of parentheses in this post ;D).

My thoughts: Ok, this sounds awesome and makes me want to go back and read Seraphina.  This isn't a sequel but a new character and adventure from the same world, so I love that I don't have to read the others. BUT, any Seraphina fans out there that want to convince me while I eagerly wait for this one?;) Loving this cover, too.

•REVIEW•

The Hearts We Sold immediately drew me in to it's crazy world where Demons have revealed their presence on Earth and will happily offer up your wildest dreams in exchange for body parts.  Dee's home life has hit a boiling point and she's suddenly finds herself at risk for losing her only escape: her boarding school education.  In her desperation to find a way to pay for it, she seeks out a demon and is surprised to find he doesn't want an arm or a leg like other deals she's heard of, he wants her heart.

From the first time meeting the many characters in the "heartless" crew, I was curious to know more about each one, especially James, and the little flashbacks to their own deal-making day satisfied that.  I love that James isn't immediately this heart-throb that she can't take her eyes off of---Dee actually thinks he's a homeless person when they first meet.  And almost all of the characters take surprising turns throughout the story. They all have their little secrets and working for a demon will stretch them all their moral and emotional limits, bonding some of them closer together---and tearing some of them apart. 

The story itself takes some interesting turns---one in particular that I thought was completely unexpected and really turns the whole story on it's head. And while the twist made sense, it opened up a whole other slew of questions, some that were answered and others that left me scratching my head. But despite that, it still proved to be an entertaining ride, a sometimes-heartfelt, sometimes-funny story about a girl learning that she doesn't always have to stand on her own, learning when to cut ties for the better, and learning to let herself love.

Emily Lloyd-Jones grew up on a vineyard in rural Oregon, where she played in evergreen forests and learned to fear sheep. After graduating from Western Oregon University with an English degree, she enrolled in the publishing program at Rosemont College just outside of Philadelphia. My thoughts: Ok, so...apologies ahead of time for picking a book that is soooo far from publication. But I just came across this one today and OMG, this sounds completely amazing. And heart-wrenching. With Angels. And SCOTLAND. And gorgeous cover to boot. The wait may kill me. LOL
